Advanced Doctoral Practicum
Advanced Doctoral Practicum Program
The advanced practicum program offers three doctoral counselors-in-training and one master's level counselor-in-training the opportunity to provide individual personal counseling to undergraduate and graduate students in a university counseling center. Trainees work with clients who present a wide range of concerns, giving them broad and in-depth training in a center dedicated to supporting students across campus.
Training Philosophy
Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) has a strong commitment to training. We view ourselves as an organization in which all of us are both teachers and learners. We also believe that individual differences and diversity serve as catalysts for personal and environmental development.
We believe people learn and work best in a supportive, collegial atmosphere; therefore, we provide a nurturing environment in which we expect trainees to stretch, take risks and grow into confident, competent, ethical psychologists who are able to empower clients and colleagues.

Program Details
Time Commitment
The advanced practicum program is structured for 20 hours per week, September – May. Students are required to attend an orientation in August. Exact dates will be shared during early Spring.
Schedules are flexible depending on practicum students' other time commitments. They are required to be here on Tuesdays from 8-11 am to meet for seminar and participate in all-staff case consultation.
Practicum students, in coordination with their supervisors and the Practicum Coordinator, determine the size of their individual caseloads, with the expectation of working to a caseload of 7-10 sessions per week.
Supervision
Practicum students receive two hours of supervision each week:
- One hour of group supervision with a licensed, doctoral-level senior psychologist.
- One hour of individual supervision with a Doctoral Intern, whose supervision is overseen by our staff psychologists.
Practicum students also participate in one hour of staff case consultation each week. Master’s-level students receive supervision from a licensed provider on our team.
Client Population
Individual counseling is provided for undergraduate and graduate students of St. Thomas. Presenting issues cover a wide range of diagnostic and developmental issues.
Practicum students are not scheduled to do career or couples counseling. Opportunities for group counseling, including psych-educational and interpersonal process modalities, are dependent on the number of groups offered each term.
Requirements
Students must have completed a practicum position involving therapy experience prior to beginning an advanced practicum position at St. Thomas. Preference is given to advanced doctoral students, however, masters students with strong backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Students must have completed relevant coursework in counseling and be enrolled in a counseling-related doctoral academic program.
