Advanced Assessment Practicum

University of St. Thomas Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is seeking doctoral-level psychology applicants for an advanced assessment practicum position. The assessment practicum runs from mid-August 2026 to mid-May 2027 and offers training in neurocognitive and psychological assessment for concerns commonly seen in college counseling, including ADHD, PTSD, OCD, and learning and mood disorders. Practicum students will engage in all aspects of the assessment process, including completing diagnostic interviews, administering tests, interpreting test results, writing integrated reports, communicating feedback and recommendations, and collaborating with peers and professionals in an integrated campus health setting. The position includes one hour of one-on-one supervision per week, one hour of weekly group assessment consultation with interns and staff, and shared opportunities for didactic learning and case consultation with CAPS therapy advanced practicum trainees.

Expected Assessment Practicum Learning Outcomes

  1. Conduct Comprehensive Diagnostic Interviews
    Students will independently conduct structured and semi-structured diagnostic interviews, demonstrating the ability to build rapport, gather relevant clinical history, and form hypotheses about differential diagnoses.
  2. Select Appropriate Tests
    Students will demonstrate the ability to select appropriate psychological assessment instruments by evaluating the psychometric properties, clinical utility, cultural fairness, and relevance of each test to the referral question and individual client characteristics.
  3. Administer and Score Standardized Psychological Tests Accurately
    Students will proficiently administer, score, and interpret commonly used cognitive, personality, and academic achievement assessments, ensuring adherence to standardized procedures and ethical testing practices.
  4. Synthesize Data into Integrated Psychological Reports
    Students will write comprehensive, integrated assessment reports that combine interview data, test results, behavioral observations, and collateral information to form coherent case conceptualizations and personalized, evidence-based recommendations.
  5. Provide Feedback to Clients in a Clear and Supportive Manner
    Students will deliver verbal feedback to clients and referral sources that is collaborative, developmentally appropriate, and structured to promote understanding, engagement in care, and self-efficacy.
  6. Develop Interdisciplinary Collaboration Skills
    Students will effectively collaborate with Center for Well-Being and campus colleagues, demonstrating an understanding of interdisciplinary roles and engaging in case consultations and didactic learning to support integrated care.
  7. Apply Ethical and Cultural Competence in Assessment Practice
    Students will recognize and address ethical considerations and cultural factors throughout the assessment process, including informed consent, test bias and selection, interpretation, and feedback, with an eye toward equitable and student-centered care.
  8. Demonstrate Effective Time and Case Management
    Students will organize and manage assessment cases, balancing interviewing, testing, scoring, interpreting, and writing tasks while meeting clinical and administrative deadlines within an integrated campus health setting.
  9. Use Data to Inform Treatment and Academic Accommodations
    Students will formulate practical, evidence-based recommendations that support students’ mental health, academic performance, and access to accommodations, aligning with campus resources and relevant regulations.

Applicant Requirements

  1. Current enrollment in a PsyD or PhD program in clinical or counseling psychology
  2. Completion of at least one year of therapy practicum experience, either at a Master’s or Doctoral level
  3. Completion of at least one semester of doctoral-level coursework in psychological assessment and at least one integrated assessment report*
  4. Familiarity with the administration, scoring, and or interpretation of aptitude, executive functioning, memory, personality, and/or psychological tests such as the WAIS-5, D-KEFS, WIAT-4, CVLT, RCFT, Millon Tests, and MMPI-3.*

*It is okay if your experience to date has only been via doctoral-level coursework
